Vertebral Augmentation in Berwick & Wilkes-Barre, PA

What Is Vertebral Augmentation?

Welcome to NEPA Vascular Institute, where we pride ourselves on offering advanced endovascular solutions to address a variety of vascular conditions. Among our comprehensive services, we are pleased to provide Vertebral Augmentation. Vertebral Augmentation is a minimally invasive procedure designed to treat vertebral compression fractures (VCFs), and it is particularly effective in addressing the symptoms associated with this condition. VCFs are small fractures or cracks that occur in the bones of the spine (vertebrae) due to conditions such as osteoporosis or spinal tumors. These fractures can cause several debilitating symptoms, and Vertebral Augmentation aims to alleviate them effectively.

What happens during Vertebral Augmentation?

Vertebral Augmentation involves two primary procedures: Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty. Both treatments are performed under local anesthesia and image-guided to ensure precision and safety.

Kyphoplasty: In this procedure, a small balloon is carefully inserted into the collapsed vertebra and gently inflated to restore its height and shape. Once the desired height is achieved, the cavity created by the balloon is filled with bone cement, stabilizing the vertebra and alleviating pain. Kyphoplasty not only relieves pain but also helps to correct spinal deformities caused by the compression fracture.

Vertebroplasty: During Vertebroplasty, bone cement is directly injected into the fractured vertebra without the use of a balloon. The cement hardens quickly, stabilizing the vertebra and providing immediate pain relief. This procedure is especially beneficial for patients who may not be suitable candidates for Kyphoplasty.

We conduct thorough evaluations and work closely with each patient to determine the most appropriate Vertebral Augmentation procedure based on their unique medical history, condition severity, and overall health.
